Research shows teachers are more likely to implement new educational practices when staff development includes collaborative and supportive discussions among their peers. (McLaughlin & Talbert, 1993). Such collegial environments feel safe and stimulate mutual trust, which all trust, which in turn invites risk taking and nurtures thoughtful practice. Collegial self-reflection * in which teachers who received training in observation, interview, and analysis skills observe and write portraits of one another*s teaching * increases teachers* self-awareness, critical thinking, collegiality, and interdisciplinary teaching (Harriman, 1992).
